ETAP ILS Gets High Marks at Indonesian Gold Mine

PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), operator of one of Indonesia’s largest copper-gold mines, has been running the ETAP Real-Time enterprise power system solution for eight months with great success.

The organization selected the enterprise solution mainly to reduce production losses due to faults caused by a variety of environmental disturbances. In addition, the company is using ETAP Real-Time to monitor, control and optimize power generation and transmission.

The company’s installation of ETAP Real-Time employs two primary products: ETAP Intelligent Load Shedding (ILS) and ETAP Power System Monitoring & Simulation (PSMS). Together, these products provide PTNNT with a fully integrated system to optimize electrical power management, resulting in lower generation cost and fewer process time losses due to unnecessary load tripping. ETAP Deployed at the Largest EPR Nuclear Plant

Framatome ANP, a division of AREVA, has deployed ETAP for its new nuclear generation facility in Olkiluoto, Finland. Framatome ANP, formed when Framatome and Siemens merged their nuclear businesses, is using ETAP to design and analyze the facility’s Electrical Distribution System. The facility will be the continent’s largest European Pressurized Water Reactor (EPR) nuclear power plant when it begins commercial operations in 2009.

The facility joins the family of international nuclear generation plants using ETAP, with installations ranging from Canada to South Korea. Within the U.S., the nuclear version of ETAP has been deployed in more than two thirds of all U.S.-based nuclear generation plants thanks in part to OTI’s status as a nuclear certified software developer. 2006 ETAP Training Events

Reflecting the growing need for enterprise power system solutions around the globe, OTI has scheduled a variety of international workshops in 2006. Locations include Canada, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and the U.S.

ETAP workshops provide the skills, knowledge, and techniques necessary to become proficient in using ETAP to conduct power system studies from modeling to analysis. A calendar of events is posted on etap.com. Events are added throughout the year. Click to view a current list of events.

Module Spotlight: Arc Flash

Engineers seeking to design safer power systems are looking to ETAP Arc Flash Analysis to estimate the arc flash incident energy under a bolted three-phase short circuit fault and determine the flash protective boundary to live parts for shock protection.

By applying ETAP Arc Flash Analysis, engineers can ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and IEEE 1584 Standards.

In addition, Arc Flash Analysis can be used to determine the suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) rating requirements based on calculated incident energy and arc flash boundaries integrated with coordination time of protective devices.

The Arc Flash Analysis is conducted in conjunction with the ANSI/IEEE and IEC Short-Circuit Device Duty calculations.
