Intelligent Load Shedding (ILS)

Intelligent Load Shedding (ILS) provides optimal, fast load shedding for electrical disturbances and loss of generation. ILS calculates the minimum required MW to be shed for each subsystem according to the type and location of the disturbance, actual operating generation, spin reserve, loading, configuration, load distribution, and priority. ILS then selects the best combination of loads (CBs) that will satisfy this requirement. All of this is executed in less than 100 ms after a disturbance occurs in the system.

Benefits
  • Eliminate unnecessary load shedding
  • Reduction of downtime for critical loads
  • Reduction of spinning reserve requirements
  • Reliable load preservation system
  • Fast response to disturbances
  • Operator alerts for marginal operating conditions
  • Display required minimum MW & selected loads
  • Trigger & time dependent load shedding
  • User-definable control logics & macros
  • Neural network knowledge base
  • User-definable system triggers
  • Operator-friendly interface
  • Display operating & recommended spin reserve
  • Display monitored data on the one-line diagram
  • Predict system response after load shed

ILS can dynamically manage the stability
of your system by responding faster to disturbances.

Why ETAP ILS is Unique
  • ILS is an integral part of ETAP. This patented technology works directly with ETAP one-line diagram, analysis modules, and real-time modules.
  • ILS works on a concept of prediction of system response to different disturbances under the actual system operating conditions.
  • ILS provides optimal load shedding solutions under both transient and steady-state system conditions.
  • ILS provides the operator the capability to change the load shedding priority, logic, and schedules directly from the one-line diagram with user-friendly interfaces. For any changes, ILS automatically updates the PLC programs.
  • Although all PLC programming is generated automatically by ETAP, custom PLC code can easily be augmented.
  • In a case of a communication failure between the ETAP Real-Time Server and the ETAP Master PLC, the ILS Backup Logic will take over and control the local PLCs from the ETAP Master PLC.
  • The ILS Backup Logic is based on the same load shedding schedule which is specified by the system operator from ETAP. It utilizes the same triggers and calculates the amount of load shedding based on the generation deficiency and the type of disturbance.
  • The operator can Verify and Validate (V&V) the ILS logic and operation before uploading a new schedule to the ETAP Master PLC, at any time during normal operation, and/or after a load shedding event has occurred. Transient stability studies with real-time data are used to V&V the ILS process.
